001b | 1906 | 12 May 1906 | Miss Laura Pesel NB. - At the office, I Google “Laura Pesel” and am soon obsessed. She was one of five Yorkshire daughters who attended Bradford Girls’ Grammar School. A curator at the University of Leeds tells me she was born in 1874, so would be 24 in the drawing. In the 1901 census she is listed as a medical student. A Miss Laura Pesel addressed students of the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts on June 30 1926. Her elder sister, Louisa, is even more interesting: helping to found the Khaki Handicrafts Club for shell-shocked soldiers. There are photographs online from a travel scrapbook showing Louisa in an absurdly long skirt, atop a seated camel in the Khyber Pass, next to earnest quotations such as: “The past is a story told; the future may be writ in Gold.” http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/f2764b06-b4ec-11e3-af92-00144feabdc0.html - An Address to the students of the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, by Miss Laura Pesel http://www.racollection.org.uk/ |

Mary Waller lived in Bethel, Vermont from 1894 to 1907, though she and her mother summered in Bethel as early as 1875 and owned property in Bethel until 1918. Many of her works were written in Bethel, and many of the scenes in her books are based in Vermont. Robinson's progress and deep interest in the Julien school. She was one of the first interested in the Art guild of our city and helped to foster and make it grow. Before her departure abroad for study she held the office of treasurer of the guild. The American students are among the most earnest workers in the ateliers of Paris. Miss Robinson is a member of the Art Club, also of Brooklyn. [The Brooklyn Daily Eagle 14 jun 1891 [https://bklyn.newspapers.com/image/50449107]] - Miss M.E. Robinson another of the group of women artist at the Ovington, and one who had a Paris training, has some sensitive and thoughful work there. A motive for an important picture is a study of two little musicians, an Italian boy and a French girl, the latter leaning forward to look at the notes, holding her mandolin meanwhile, in the prettiest way possible. It is a sober picture, natural and dignified. The dark background harmonizes with the quiet colors of the children's attire, and the light is concentrated on the fave of the girl, leaning forward. Another expressive canvas shows a woman in gray, before a pale neutral space. An effect of sadness and mystery is there, whether intentional or not, and the study makes a strong impression upon the onlooker. The head of a young woman wearing a head drapery, suggesting Red Riding Hood, makes another pleasant effect on the studio wall. A portrait of an elderly matron shows much cateful and judicious handling. Some creamy roses are carelessly arranged in a vase upon the studio tale and have served as a text for a vertitable sermon in paint. Purity of tint and crips handling are evident in the result. Miss Robinson proposes to take a sketch abroad, inApril tot remain five months. The artist is thoroughly able to accomplish the feat having sketched and traveled much on the continent. The party will go to Paris, visiting the salon, Louvre and the Luxemborg. Sketching along the Seine and evirons of Paris will occupy the party until the middle of June. Then the tourists will start for Amsterdam, stopping at Brussels and Antwerp and studying the old Dutch masters. The picturecque old toen of Volendam will be a special point of interest detaining the students about eleven weeks in it and its environs. Haarlem and The Hague come in for a good share of attention; Rotterdam is the last stop, September 26 finding the party there. Not more than ten students will be resolved into the class, and the expenses for one will be $400. Mrs. Douglas Stearns .. Miss Edith Sawyer, still another of the woman artist group at Ovington .... [The Brooklyn Daily Eagle (Brooklyn, New York) 23 Feb 1896, Sun] - BOUND FOR HOLLAND. Miss M.E. Robinson starts off with a class. Mr. Steenks Goes over for a Dutch Bride-Miss Bannister's Portraits of Boys-mr Ruger's general Woodward. A gay and festive party of art students under the chaporonage of MISS M.E. ROBINSON, who is a well known local painter here, started for HOLLAND yesterday. Dykes, storks, tulips, delft ware, windmills and other Dutch products wete metaphorically upon tongues of the enthusiastic art pilgrims as they held a levee on the deck of the big steamer which was to carry them, across the ocean. The party will go first to PARIS, but Holland is their mecca, their promised land, toward which they journey with the eye of faith and the fondest anticipations. Another local artist, GERARD M. STEENKS, is in Holland this season, or rather he is a transplanted painter from AMSTERDAM,...etc. [Brooklyn Eagle 1896 April 28 ] - LOCAL ART NOTES. M.E. Robinson has a large canvas upon which she is at work at present, called 'News of the Boats'. It is the most important picture she has yet painted, and shows a Holland interior, with figures of young girls in qualme white caps, a strong type of a granddame and the figure of a mother, with a bright little child for balance. Miss ROBINSON was abroad on a sketching tour this summer in HOLLAND, and gathered this material. Mrs J. Douglass Stearns has been painting.../...Miss Coleman...etc [1897 March 7 Brooklyn Eagle] - M.E. Robinson has a large canvas upon which she is at work at present called 'Nows of the Boats' it is the most important picture which she has yet painted, and shows an Holland interior, with figures of youngs girls in quaint white caps, a strong type of a granddame and the figure of a mother with a bright little child for balance. Miss Robinson was abroad on a sketching tour this summer in Holland, and gathered this material. [The Brooklyn Daily Eagle (Brooklyn, New York) 07 Mar 1897, Sun] - Miss M.E. Robinson has been painting a rich, dark Holland interior, showing a group of peasants. The tone of the wood celled room, the ancient furniture and bits of Delft, added to the quiet colors of the women's gowns, relieved by their white caps, makes this canvas a fine one. Miss Robinson studied the home life of the Dutch peasantry very carefully when in Holland last season. [The Brooklyn Daily Eagle (Brooklyn, New York) 04 Apr 1897, Sun] - Miss M.E. Robinson who had planned to take a sketching party into Holland this season, last year's trip having been so successful, has at length decided to remain in this country during the summer and autumn. [The Brooklyn Daily Eagle (Brooklyn, New York) 11 Jul 1897] - Miss M.E. Robinson takes a class of young girls to Holland, remaining until September. This enables her pupils to study under the influence of the best of that country. [Middletown NY Daily Press 1897 Jun-Jan 1898 00152.pdf] - Miss M.E. Robinson expects to go abroad this summer, especially to attend the Rembrandt anniversary celebration. [The Brooklyn Daily Eagle 15 May 1906 (https://bklyn.newspapers.com/image/53938688/?terms=%22m.e.%2Brobinson%22)] - M.E. Robinson who is now at her Ovington Building Studio again, after her summer in Europe made a special study in miniature painting while in Paris, calling on the celebrated ivory painters there, studying the tiny ivory portraits of the Louvre, and otherwise making that branch of painting a study. She has orders for several important miniatures this season. [The Brooklyn Daily Eagle (Brooklyn, New York) 01 Oct 1899, Sun] - In order to attend the tri-centennial celebrations of Rembrandt in Holland, Miss Dorothea Dreier, accompanied by Miss M.E. Robinson, has been sojourning there. Miss Dreier is most enthusiastic over hert art studies and has been a thorough student during the past few years. Miss Robinson has been a member of the local art circle for some years and when she left Brooklyn to become a member of the Manhattan colony last year it occassioned no little surprise. it is not known when the travelers will return, as they are contemplating spending some time in the quanint Dutch villages and then visiting the picturesque spots in Germany. 012b | 1906 | " | H.J. Eady & wife NB. H. J. Eady was born in Northamptonshire, England. When a young man he came to Elyria and engaged in the drug business as clerk. In 1873 he establislied liis present business, beginning in a little one story frame structure on Cheapside, the site of his present store. He gradually increased and enlarged his business until 1886, when through lack of room and desire to improve the street and town he built the three story brick building in which his store is now located. April ist, 1903, Mr. Eady celebrated his 30th business anniversary by holding on that day a sale to start a fund for a permanent city hospital. During his career in the drug business Mr. Eady has originated several valuable preparations which have become well and widely known. https://archive.org/stream/picturesqueelyri00elyr/picturesqueelyri00elyr_djvu.txt |
